Glen Leibowitz Scholarship
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the Glen Leibowitz Scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university in the United States. (Students of any class year, from freshman through Ph.D. candidates, are eligible to apply.)
- The institution can be any accredited U.S.-based public or private college or university, and all fields of study (majors/minors) are welcome.
- No minimum GPA is required; academic excellence is valued, but our aim is to be inclusive of students with diverse academic backgrounds.
- There are no age, gender, ethnicity, or national origin restrictions. International students who are studying at U.S. institutions are eligible.
- You must be the original author of the essay submitted. The essay should be written in English, keeping it within the recommended length, and directly address the provided prompt.
- Each applicant may submit only one application/essay per year. (Previous applicants who did not win may reapply in subsequent years, but must submit a new essay each year. Past scholarship winners are not eligible to win a second time.)
Application Instruction:
Prepare Your Essay: Reflect on the scholarship prompt and write an essay that shares your personal story or moment. Your essay should be honest, original, and in your own voice. We recommend writing and revising your essay in a separate document. Ensure it stays within the word count range and check for clarity, grammar, and adherence to the topic. Tip: You may want to have a counselor, professor, or mentor review it and provide feedback, but the content must remain authentically yours.
Key Dates for 2025 Application Cycle:
- Application Deadline: January 15, 2026 – All essays and applications must be submitted online.
- Review Period: January 18 – February 15, 2026 – During this time, the scholarship committee evaluates submissions. Additional information or verification may be requested from finalists if necessary.
- Award Disbursement: The $1,250 scholarship award will be disbursed to the winner. Typically, arrangements will be made directly with the student for payment. The funds can be sent as a check or electronic transfer, either directly to the student or to the university’s financial aid office, as per the winner’s preference and the scholarship’s guidelines (see Terms & Conditions for details). The winner will need to verify enrollment at that time to claim the award.
Submission Guidelines
- Length & Format: Your essay must be between 600 and 700 words. We recommend typing it in a standard font (e.g., Times New Roman or Arial, 12-point) and double-spacing for readability, though formatting will not affect the judging as long as the content is clear. Save the final essay in .pdf format for upload.
- Original Work: The essay must be your own original work. Do not copy from other sources or submit someone else’s writing. Plagiarism will result in disqualification. We may use plagiarism-detection software during the review.
- Content: Ensure your essay clearly addresses the given prompt. It should describe a specific moment or story from your life and reflect on how that experience influenced who you are. Be as specific as possible—authentic personal stories and thoughtful reflection make your essay stand out. Stay true to your voice; the committee wants to learn about you through your writing.
- Editing: Before submitting, proofread your essay for spelling, grammar, and clarity. While this is not a writing contest judged on literary style alone, a well-written essay helps communicate your story effectively. However, don’t worry if English is not your first language – your ideas and sincerity are most important.
- One Submission: Remember that only one essay submission is allowed per applicant. If multiple entries are received from the same student, only the first submission will be considered. Make sure your uploaded file is final and complete.
- Privacy: Do not include overly sensitive personal information in your essay (like social security numbers, etc.). The content should focus on your experiences and insights.
